1. Applicants will be required to have a master’s degree in appropriate discipline with aggregate marks of not less than 55% or equivalent CGPA.
2. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (with JRF)//UGC-CSIR NET (with JRF)//SLET/GATE//teacher fellowship holder are exempted from appearing for PGC PhD entrance exam. A call on phone for an interview will be made to them directly.
3. The other candidates, again here VIT, would have to do an entrance exam to be able to pursue a PhD. The exam measures one's ability to do research, the competence of the subject matter, and proficiency with the language. Candidates who get 50% marks or more in the qualifying exam become eligible for the interviews.
4. Shortlisted candidates have to give a seminar speech after which the selection committee will make the final call on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the entrance exam and/or interview.
5. The final list of candidates is prepared as per the total share of the candidate in the PhD entrance exam, interview or seminar presentation and also as per the supervisor choice of candidate.
6. Apart from this, the candidates who have qualified for JRF under various schemes are eligible to directly appear for the interview, where they will be asked to present a seminar without having to write a written test.

1. Performance in VIT Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE) - VITEEE ranks are the primary criteria for admission. Based on the ranks, initial shortlisting of candidates is done.
