The Biomedical Laboratory Assessment Test (BLAT) is a written examination used to evaluate the abilities and knowledge of people aspiring to become Biomedical Laboratory technicians either as Technicians or Technologists. A BLAT test is designed for medical laboratory personnel training and it covers many issues like microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, and transfusion medicine. Candidate is required to take the BLAT and pass it with a sufficient level of understanding what laboratory tests are, how the equipment is used, which quality control procedures are followed, what safety protocols are applied and which samples are analyzed correctly.
The HBLAT procedure is computer-based, and it has the same 200 multiple choice questions. Meaning of the results from exams is mostly announced within a few weeks. The most common consensus for the passing mark is approximately 70% marks. For those who qualifies, the credential of Certified Biomedical Laboratory Technician (CBLT) or Certified Biomedical Laboratory Scientist (CBLS) is awaiting them.
