- Selection of students is based on the score in JEE Main which is indeed a cutthroat exam. To start with, one has to qualify JEE Main as it is the next level after appearing for it.
- Through the process of seat allocation and counseling at ISM Dhanbad, students are selected based on the JEE Main scores and their respective ranks.
- The seats are given according to JEE Main rank, in the order it is filled, category, and availability of seats in the various branches of BTech.
- 85 JEE Main merit seats among 105 are considered for admissions. The requirement is that the party should field at least 10% female candidates. Disability candidate is given a5% quota.
- Students from SC/ST category need a pass mark of 75% only in 10+2 board exams. The upper caste students have to get 200 marks out of 400 in their last board exams.
- Aside from exams, students also requirement to satisfy the eligible norms such as age limit, nationality and meet necessary medical fitness.

- Admitting students will be based on the national-wide entrance exam which will be called Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). This is a month-long residential program that is carried out by the IITs.
- Student will then be assigned to a seat in one of the IITs or ISM Dhanbad according to their JAM score and preference respectively. The minimum qualifying is a degree in bachelors with 55% marks (50% for SC/ST respectively).
- Some M.Sc programs at ISM Dhanbad is open only for a select category of candidates having a valid GATE score in relevant branches. These candidates need to apply directly. List of candidates who’s name is in the shortlist need to appear for the interview process.

- The admission is based on the candidates score in the national level management entrances test e.g. CAT/XAT/CMAT/MAT and there is also a group discussing and personal interviewing based on the performance by ISM Dhanbad.
- The candidates passing through the CAT shortlist will be directing invited to give their GD/ PIs. People who don't possess a CAT score are supposed to qualify a university exam performed by the ISM.
