The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program at Jamia Millia Islamia is a 5-year undergraduate program that aims at rendering students dentists. The students will attain much theoretical knowledge and practical skill which are related to oral healthcare like prevention, diagnosis and treatment diseases which affect oral cavity.
The curriculum teaches topics such as human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology as well as specialized dental courses in periodontics, orthodontics, oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Students are exposed to the clinical aspect in the third year and onwards, where they are subjected to practical classes and rotations in the on-campus dental hospital.
Modern teaching methods such as case studies, evidence-based learning, and problem solving methodologies are applied to the curriculum design to develop thinking skills of the students. Being a graduate of this program, students receive a BDS degree which allows them to practice dentistry in India with one year of compulsory rotatory internship. This program offers students an excellent background in basic science and clinical training, so they will be able to excel in their field of dentistry.
