Dentistry is one of the most preferable careers in the past few years in this nation of India. Over 300 dental colleges in India provide Bachelor’s Degree of Dental Surgery (i) and Master’s Degree of Dental Surgery (ii) for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Dental Council of India, which is the regulatory authority, looks after education and profession of dental diagnostics.
The majority of dental colleges are linked up with universities and the power is in the hands of central, and the state governments. Though there were no private dental colleges for many years before 1990, there has been a dramatic increase in the numbers of private dental colleges in the recent past. Government dental colleges have entrances which are very competitive with the one to be admitted being based on concerns of examination test scores. Public schools may be cheaper than private colleges which demand much more money.
1. Decide whether it’s worth taking BDS (an MBBS for dental surgery) or MDS (a postgraduate course in this field) and choose colleges on the same basis. Studying colleges and participate in entrance exams like NEET.
2. For government college admission, participate in the centralized counselling provided by DGHS or state government based on your NEET ranking. The next step for private colleges is to apply for DACA.
3. Fill the application forms neatly by providing accurate details of your academic performance as well as personal information such as gender, date of birth and mode of payment etc. This is to request for an extension of the submission date that should be before the deadline.
4. Being informed on time make sure to be present for the counseling and as per the schedule. Decide on your best college and course to ensure you get confirmation of your final admission based on your deadline. Kindly do the completion of admissions formalities that include verification of documents and payment of fees.
5. After being accepted, attend class, finish assignments or internship on time and put your best effort to become a successful dentists. Exploit all resources (facilities and training) to become the best dentist you can be.
Top Entrance Exams for Dental Courses
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the widely acceptable exam for the BDS level study in Under Graduate (Dental) courses in India. However, organized by the National Education Agency, It is conducted throughout the country once a year and students who qualify for the entrance test can apply for BDS and MDS courses according to their score and rank.
1. Educational Qualification: Candidates must have gone through 10+2 exam or equivalent one with science subjects, namely, physics, chemistry, biology as main subjects. At least 50-60% total marks (average) is the minimum requirement for being eligible to apply to college.
2. Entrance Exams: Clearing the national/state level exams such as NEET, AIPMT, AFMC, which are mandatory for admission, at a time seems to be the only and ultimate way of being admitted in an institution of choice. Then, the ranking obtained in the entry exams is used for the offer of the place.
3. Age Limit: An unwritten age specification however, they tend to prefer candidates who are within the age bracket of 25 years and below. Some colleges set the upper age limit for each candidate group lower.
4. Number of Attempts: Number of attempts allowed in exams may be limited, 2 to 3 chances for general entries while reserving categories have opportunities from 5 to 6.
5. Personal Interview: Being medical fitness and clearing the interview at most colleges is a necessity after scoring brilliantly in the entrance test. The interview is aimed at a comprehensive assessment of the candidate’s motivation and his/her approach to life’s challenges.
