Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is a highly distinguished medical university, a center of medical learning and research. This year old institution is called DR. M.G. Ramachandran Government College of Higher Education, after the former CM of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. The affiliation of colleges and institutes of medical, dental, nursing, and allied health sciences in the state of Tamil Nadu, is also an area where the University holds a stronghold. It happens to have 600 member colleges with average student intake over 50,000. College organizes examinations for all UG, PG, postgraduate diploma and super specialty medical courses. These courses are run by the university’s affiliating schools. There are two major courses – Medicine and surgery (MBBS) and dental surgery (BDS). The hours of final examination for both of these courses in 2024 have been proclaimed by the university - the MBBS exams will be held in June 2024 and the BDS exams in May 2024. First, the applicant shall pass the selection process, that is, application and counseling based on merits. Each year the admissions window usually opens in July of the preceding year, where the applicants are subjected to counseling and queue for seat allocation through August before the program commences in September of 2024. Medical universities set the highest standards of regulation, monitoring and quality control for the institutes affiliated by it in the state.

The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Eligibility Criteria 2024

- MBBS applicants must possess at least 50% (40% reserved) marks on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology and English at 12th standard. Another support is that they must meet the requirement of NEET.

- Along with BDS, candidates also should have passed 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a similar percentage (45% for general; 40% for reserved categories). While applying for them, these students should pass the medical examination.

- In this respect, general nursing diploma is that candidates should have passed the tier XII with qualification in PCB and English as per university norms.

- For a Diploma in Allied Health science courses like Pharmacy, candidates must have at minimum 10+2 in physics, chemistry and Biology / Maths. The mark range per course is across the spectrum, 40-50% is commonly the aggregate requirement.  

- For courses like Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, the qualified candidates should have at least 50% in 12th standard, meaning with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

- Reservations concession by 5% marks is valid across all courses for the reserved category.
