Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science being the highest academic degree conferred on political science studies in India, it is the highest level of attainment and accomplishment of the field. By average, the PhD may take 3-5 years.
Academic plan of a doctorate degree is directed on deep study and analysis of such topics as Indian politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, public administration and public policy. Students must have a master’s degree in political science or related field to obtain the PhD standing. The classes are built along the lines of studying research methodology, quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, and examining literature. Students take qualifying exams at the end of each stage of coursework, finish the coursework, and proceed to independent research.

1. Obtain a bachelor degree, with an emphasis in political science, and try to raise the cumulative grade point average.
2. Take the GRE and demonstrate your proficiency, or if possible, do well so that your analytical writing score is good.
3. Be certain to have strong professors' letters of reference.
4. Remember to write the essay of a purpose of the study presenting academic interests and skills.
5. Remember to have at least two application submission deadlines with emphasis on any research experience that might be mentioned in the application form.
6. Should a possibility of interview be given, present how yours is consistent with faculty's interests and how the advanced study of hair is the major area in which you are motivated about.
1. At least a 55% score in master degree in political science, public administration, or the relevant field OR the equivalent grade. As some universities will need to do qualifying exams.
2. Practical training in design, implementation, and evaluation of qualitative and quantitative research methods can be provided through writing scientific articles. Some of these schools require the research proposal.
3. Exhibiting good writing skills in academic essays and showing fluency through academic samples of previous work. International TOEFL/ IELTS scores should be sufficient for the test.
4. Letters of reference from previous supervisors or advisers indicating are necessary to highlight both research potential and skills.
5. In case you have a solid background in the areas such as public policy, governance, international relations etc. you can have plus but not a must.
6. Well-defined interests, for example, those captured in comparative politics, political theory, international relations, public administration, among other fields. Evidence can be seen by an individual’s academic record.
UGC NET (Political Science): National Eligibility Test conducted by UGC, is a nation-wide exam, designed to test the candidate's research ability, general knowledge and knowledge in the given field.
UPSC (Political Science): The UPSC exam is an assessment of comprehension on political theories, governance, and the international relations.
JNU Entrance Exam (Political Science): Moderated by that of Jawaharlal Nehru University, the candidates are graded on their political ideologies, theories, and current issues.
IGNOU Entrance Exam (Political Science): Indira Gandhi National Open University's admission exam is in the form of politics theory, public administration, and international relationships.
