In India, M.Des stands for Masters of Design, and it is a postgraduate-degree program that runs for 2 years full-time. It was introduced in the early 1960s with an intention to impart the ability to the students to think beyond the design and come up with innovative and technology driven design solutions by using the interdisciplinary knowledge. 

The course design contains the core design courses that provide a foundation in research methods, design theory and knowledge dissemination. Furthermore, students attend specialized classes each in a discipline like fashion design, communication design, can fabric design, fashion accessories design, design for a retail experience, human computer interaction design, design for new technologies and so on. Such courses their designs and presentations depending on the expertise offered in the institute.

Master of Design [M.Des] Admission Process

Educational Qualifications: Design bachelor degree from a reputable university or educational institution and related area diploma. The fields of study may vary in different programs. Some programs may accept candidates with equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

Portfolio Submission: Applicants typically would be asked to submit their portfolio displaying the design projects they have completed, their creativity and their competences. The portfolio display the design skill and talent through the applicant's work.

Entrance Examination: Some institutions will hold interviews which will test the candidate's ability to work in team and think creatively. The test may include the sub-components such as aptitude test, interviews or written examination.

Letter of Intent: Applicants should provide a synopsis of their goals for the M.Des program, their future career aspirations, and specific design themes they intend to explore.

Letters of Recommendation: The authorities could involve professors, employers, or people like them who are familiar with the design abilities of a candidate as well as his/her academic/work performance.

English Language Proficiency: If it is international applicants or the countries where English is not mother tongue, admittance may require the showing of English language ability using the standardized tests for example TOEFL or IELTS.

Master of Design [M.Des] Eligibility

- MDes means MSc, which is an advanced master-level postgraduate degree in design. MDes could be offered with a specialization in variety of designs such as industrial design, fashion design and digital media design.

- A suitable requirement for MS programs may include bachelor's degree in design, architecture or art and sometimes some other criteria, such as, portfolio, statement of purpose, etc.

- In general, course numbers are 3 or 4 digits, the first number which signifies the department, the second number which designates the level, and the third number which reveals the specific course. 

Master of Design [M.Des] Entrance Exams

CEED: Common Entrance Exam for Design tests both practical skills of design and candidates' aesthetic perception and creativity with two methodologies, the written and visual ones.

NID DAT: National Institute of Design (NID) Design Aptitude Test evaluates individuals' design skills, imagination and abilities to use their knowledge following the principles of design through two stages of evaluation - Prelims and Mains exam.

UCEED: Undergraduate common entrance examination (UCEED) is done test the applicants' visual aptitude, creativity and visualization skill by giving them a computer based exam, specific for under graduate design programs.

AIEED: Indian Institute of Design Entrance Exam measures candidates' competencies in aptitude, imagination and innovation as they get interviewed, review their portfolio and sit for the written test so that they get the admission for undergraduate or postgraduate study programmes.
