A Ph.D. in Horticulture is a 3-year research program with principal emphasis on the science and technology underlying the production of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, plantation crops, and medicinal plants. The curriculum is primarily based on advanced insights and skills in plant propagation, production technology, post harvest management, plant breeding, seed production, development of new cultivars and applying biotechnology.

In addition to horticulture major courses, students also take other supportive courses such as plant pathology, entomology, soil science, biochemistry, and statistics. The coursework comprises all the criteria for qualifying exams, research proposal presentation and writing, as well as conducting research that leads to a doctoral candidate's dissertation. The thesis focuses on applying scientific exploration to develop new horticulture-related information.

PhD Horticulture Admission 2024

1. Require of applicants to hold a master’s degree in horticulture or a related field. 

2. 3.0 GPA as a minimum requirement in the master's program. 

3. First GRE score - verbal and quantitative as well as analytical writing scores to be submitted. 

4. Reason for the research mentioned and the overall goals. 

5. A strong proposal includes the different letters of recommendation letters from professors and/or employers. 

6. Write an essay on the subject of the International Relations of my choice such as master's thesis or published paper. 

7. Knowledge of current events/research is recommended. 

8. The admission committee also can set an interview if they require extra information. 

9. Application fee – differs according to university. 

10. Graduate studies programs that offer financial aid and assistantships are good places to start. After that, you would want to speak with your graduate program advisor.

PhD Horticulture Course Eligibility 2024

1. Bachelors degree in horticulture, agriculture or any other related field with minimum passing marks of 55%. 

2. A horticulture, agriculture, plant sciences, or related field master degree scored between 55% and equivalent grade.  

3. At the given stage, passing the university entrance test defined by the university/institute such as NET/GATE/JRF or equivalent.

4. In addition to this, some universities can ask for work experience or published research results, whilst they may still have to qualify the interview.

Ph.D. Horticulture Entrance Exams

ICAR AIEEA PG: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research All India Entrance Examination for Admission to Post-Graduate courses for Ph.D. tests the right knowledge prospective students have in horticulture and related fields.

ICAR JRF/SRF: The ICAR Junior Research Fellowship/Senior Research Fellowship tests assess candidates' research abilities, and subject knowledge with regards to horticulture, needed to commencing PhD programmes.
