The LLM in Family Law is a 2-year postgraduate degree program that is oriented around different domain areas of marriage laws, divorce laws, adoption of child laws, succession laws, and the laws of domestic violence under Indian Legal System. The curriculum offers insightful knowledge of personal laws pertaining to different communities say the Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and several others. It also offers knowledge on secular laws like the act of special marriage, domestic violence, guardians and wards, adoption, maintenance.

The program involves the study of family law theory, policy analyses, new trends and comparative consideration. Major themes of the course include legal matters pertaining to marriage, divorce, maintenance, adoptions and surrogacy, property rights, domestic violence against women, gender inequality, children’s rights and family court procedure. The students take in the skills such as legal researching, legal analysis, problem solving, advocacy, mediation, and counseling which are very much related to family law practice.

LLM Family law Admission 2024

1. A university degree in law (LLB) or an equivalent is a compulsory prerequisite. 

2. Normally, having good academic record with specific grade of minimum 55% marks is the basic requirement.  

3. Entry is through the Reddits or universities' own selection processes or personal interviews.

4. Application form, letter of letters of recommendation, transcript, recognized nationally test scores etc. are key application elements. 

5. Though the applicants who had work experience in family law or related fields were considered as the priority, this experience was not a must.

LLM Family law Course Eligibility 2024

1. Juris Doctor (JD) degree, or its equivalent in the field of law. This should be the first factor for consideration in order to be accepted into master of laws, LLM. Requirement of being a JD holder or an equivalent degree from a US School of law approved by the state bar is a must.

2. Strong academic record. To be accepted into programs, you most of the time have to prove that you were performing well during your JD program. Many programs require a minimum GPA (e.g. 3.0 out of 4.0). 

3. Personal statement and letter of recommendation. As one of the application processes stages, the program will most likely require an essay written by you where you will express your academic interest and references from academic or professional references.

4. English language proficiency. For non-native speakers of English, the English language skills must be proofed through TOEFL/IELTS test scores, lessons according to lecture in English, etc.

5. Last but not least, it urges to have some experience with family law (though may not always be the requirement). A previous course, engagement in clinical experience, doing research in family law or full time job in the same field before they apply for LLM will be a huge plus for your application to be successful.

6. Interview Optional (optional). There could be some projects in which admissions interview is incorporated as part of application process to check the interest, qualifications and match between you and their program.

CLAT PG: The Common Law Admission Test for Postgraduate Programs examines applicants’ strengths in subjects like Constitutional Law, Family Law, Legal Reasoning, and Legal Aptitude

AILET PG: The All India Common Law Entrance Examination for Post graduation courses gauges the ability of the applying candidates on these topics: Family Law, Law of Contracts, Jurisprudence, etc.

DU LLM Entrance Exam: Organized by the University of Delhi, the exam aims at testing whether students understand areas such as Family Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, among others.

MH CET Law PG: The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test for Law Postgraduate determines if candidates are competent on subjects such as Family Law, Property Law, the theory of Administrative Law, etc.

LSAT India: The Law School Admission Test that contains the sections of Legal Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Logical Reasoning is used to determine whether individuals are eligible to pursue the path of becoming a Family Lawyer or not.
