The examination is to evaluate candidates from multiple subjects like Mathematics for engineering, general aptitude, and subjects on the program applied for.

The test date can be found on the university web pages, which are typically updated in around June each year. To be expected for the year 2024, the exams may be held during the third week of June 2024. Students usually start prepping 2-3 months in advance of the exam. A successful conduction of exam is followed by the announcement of PGECET results by GTU on its website up to one month after the date of examination. Those who are able to clear the examination and score marks above the cut-off value are eligible for taking part in GTU counselling in order to get a confirmed admission.

The PGECET rankings are also a factor that plays an imperative role for the universities for admission along with the candidates' academic details. It is one of the most reputed entrance exams of Gujarat, which is being held for years together to provide admission in postgraduate technical courses. In Gujarat alone, over 15,000 students take the PGECET exam every year.
