In India, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accountancy is a 3-year full-time doctoral program, with which the students get advanced study in research and education in accounting. Our program curriculum entails advanced coursework in financial accounting, management accounting, accounting theory and research methodology, quantitative techniques besides electives. During the course of their studies students not only conduct research, but also individual studies and a doctoral dissertation, the results of which make an original contribution to the field of accounting practice.

The program has got coursework and research components in it. In the first year, an association of courses required for a doctoral degree is carried out. Year II is dedicated to electives and genetic testing in accounting subjects, oral and written comprehensive examinations and presenting a thesis proposal and starting the actual research. The last year is aimed at data collection for a thesis and its writing taking into account original research, for example, in accounting, auditing, taxation or managerial accounting.

Ph.D. (Accountancy) Admission Process

1. Minimum required qualification should be a bachelor's degree from appropriate commerce or accounting streams with 55% percentage or above.

2. Exam conducted aiming to measure the applicants research abilities and knowledge with the examination subjects. 

3. Personal interview test for academic records, research interests and aptitude assessment.

4. Ultimately, admission decisions will be performed on the applicants' performance in the test, interview and academic records.

5. Graduation study of 1-2 years: research methodology and complex accounting issues.

6. Research proposal presentation meeting and approbation of faculty members

7. A research project generally covers 3-5 years for research, data collection, analysis, writing the thesis and defense.

Ph.D. (Accountancy) Eligibility

1. Undergraduate (or) Master's degree in the disciplines of Accountancy, Finance, Commerce, or Business Administration with at least 55% marks/equivalent grade. Also eligible to apply are students who are coming to the end of their master's course.

2. Firstly, qualify an entrance test, for example UGC-NET or GATE, etc. But some universities hold their own entrance exams also. 

3. Conduct a series of interview sessions that will measure the suitability of candidates with a penchant for research in the area of accountancy. Candidates should be aware of accounting basics, including relevant concepts and theories in the field.

4. Some universities, for instance, want to see students with at least A score or a valid pass in TOEFL/IELTS test scores if an applicant is foreign. Some universities may have a higher minimum requirement of scores called for than others.

5. Accountancy, finance or commerce related preferable work experience can help form a solid ground at universities for many candidates. Human experience is also an important aspect. (Note: "Human experience" can be substituted with "teaching experience").

6. Having an academic record that's strong without fail or having a backlog or a break is usually mandatory. Some of the universities have the Clear cut CGPA/percentage criteria in the undergraduate’s and master’s programs.

7. Some highly ranked universities can require a research record of papers published in peer-reviewed journals which are conducted in relevant fields.

Ph.D. Accountancy Entrance Exams

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test): Evaluates analytical writing, integrated reasoning , quantitative , and verbal skills. Typically demanded, when applying for Ph.D. programs in accountancy, by business schools, and especially by the finance departments.

GRE (Graduate Record Examination): It evaluates the skills in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. GRE might be the only option applicable for some programs, instead of GMAT.
