The LLM in Environmental Law is a 2-year graduate-level professional degree program, which should be an area of concern to the people, who deal with the environmental issues and the natural resources management and environmental sustainability. Students become specialists in issues like environmental policy and sustainability, environmental assessment, pollution regulation, climate change law, water law, among others, which go beyond their respective disciplines.

The curriculum encompasses mandatory courses in the area of public environmental law and policy, international environmental law, jurisprudence of the environment, environmental management, environmental economics, research methods and others alike. Besides, the mandatory courses that students take which are coastal zone management, energy laws, environmental audit or environmental health and toxic torts, there are 3-4 elective classes one can select from.

Step Description

Master of Laws [L.L.M.] (Environmental Law) Eligibility

1. JD (Juris Doctor) Certificate or any other equivalent law degree. Basically, to advance to the higher LLM programs, the LLM candidates are required to complete the pre-requisite course. You should have not only have finished a 3-year JD program or its equivalent from an accredited law school but also have achieved a very good GPA in your final year.

2. Strong academic record. Usually, a JD program demands minimum GPA of 3.0 but some programs may have a more strict policy with a higher minimum expected GPA for example 3.3 or 3.5. The outcome of your studies in graduate law programs demonstrates your potential to keep up with the input of the law school education.

3. Letters of recommendation. Generally, the applications include two or three letters from law professors or other legal professionals who will use their personal knowledge of you to point out your academic strengths and identify your interest in environmental law.

4. Personal statement. The essay that you are to write should be themed around your personal aims, academic background, research interest, and professional goals with respect to the environmental law. Additionally, in the case of the university, the college counselor will determine if the student matches with the program.  

5. English language skills (school type). If English is not your native language, the TOEL or IELTS tests may be the only way to show that you understand the language. The minimum grades demanded swing through a range from university to university.

6. Application form, process and fee. Eligibility criteria vary across all programs in that all of them require the application of an application form to be filled out and fees to be paid for application and processing. The due date for applications are the other unique characteristics.
