The Indian Territorial Army (ITA) is a common arm of the Indian Army; its recruitment into its officer cadre is done through the Territorial Army National Aptitude Test (TANATA) that is conducted by the ITA. A biannual exam with knowledge questions in areas of logical reasoning, numerical abilities, observation, and basics about the constitution of India, history, and culture is conducted. The test is a 2 hours duration pen-and-paper type containing approximately 120 questions split between the exam areas according to the determined syllabus's parameters.
Test-takers shall have to reach at the minimum qualifying score as per the criterion executed by the ITA (Interview and Test Administration Team) to get a green-signal and proceed to the next rounds including a personal interview. The last list is prepared on the basis of the aggregate score of the written exam and interview which was bagged by the applicant. TANATA TOTAS exams to be held in June and November in 2024. Results of the tests are published by the Council in a month at the end of the testing period. Two years of service from selected candidates officers will count as a voluntary period of military service only after their health is tested by a medical and physical strength and endurance tests.
The TANATA 2024 is a national sized exam. Therefore, the learning needs to be intensive and a lot of time is required for its preparation. A sizeable number of youths aspire to join Territorial Army and carry out their nation building duty while pursuing their main career, due to the LMI that Territorial Army officers receive.
