The SLET is an entrance examination conducted at the national level with collaboration from universities and state public service commissions in India for the purpose of qualifying candidates for lectureship and the position of Assistant Professor in different colleges and universities. SLET evaluates a candidate in their area of specialization, his/her intelligence, and teaching abilities. It is equal to clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET).
The SLET has two papers with one assessing the knowledge of the subject taught and the other assessing ability to teach. The result of the examination is based on an aggregate of 40% for all the papers, but a candidate must obtain at least 35% in each paper. Depending on their merit and the available positions, suitable candidates may be employed at different levels, including as lecturers or Assistant Professors. They accord or proctor the exam in most cases, once or twice a year.
