Medical College Admission Test or MCAT is a standardized, multiple choice exam which is developed to gauge the applicant’s problem solving skills, critical thinking ability as well as the knowledge of natural, behavioral and social sciences which is important for medicine. The exam is one of the important requirements used by the medical schools to determine the applicants together with the GPA, application dossier, interview, recommendations. MCAT lasts for approximately 7.5 hours and comprises four categories; biological and biochemical basis of living organisms; the chemistry of life; and understanding the behavior of living organisms; and finally critical thinking skills.
The MCAT is developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is available in computer-based format and can be taken several times per year, although it is more common to prepare and sit for the MCAT before matriculating for admission in the following year and therefore most students take the MCAT in the spring or summer of the year before applying to medical school. Dates for registration for 2024 MCAT testing will be available on AAMC website during the period of the fiscal year 2023.Generally exam results are expected to be out within a month after the examination has been conducted.
