MDS is a Master of Dental Surgery that is a 3-year PG level education in India which mainly covers the advanced specializations in Dentistry. To name a few, prognosis, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery and conservative dentistry are available in more than 300 dental colleges.
The selection prerequisites need applicants to have done BDS degree from an institutionally recognized dental college attained an aggregated average of not less than 50%. Candidates are enrolled based on their performance in the PG Nationwide Entrance Test for Medical Dentistry (NEET MDS) conducted by the National Board of Examinations. A number of the states also posses their own entrance examinations.

1. BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree - Students must obtain their BDS degree (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from a college that is recognized by the dentistry authorities.
2. internship - The candidates need to clear a 1-year rotatory internship successful completion to be considered for the post of dentists.
3. Formalization with State Dental Council - Candidates must have their registration with any State Dental Council in India.
4. A minimum marks requirement - students ought to have scored at least 50% marks (40% for SC/ST category) in the aggregate of BDS degree program. Some colleges in similar courses will ask for higher percentage in order to get the admission.
5. Entrance Exam -The candidates must achieve a minimum score in the NEET MDS exam, an exam conducted by the National Board of Examinations to gain admission to PG MDS programs across different colleges. Some states and institutes may try to engender other entrance tests for their candidates.
NEET MDS: National Eligibility cum Entrance test for Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) admissions, a test where dentistry applicants are examined regarding various dental subjects and only those who score well are admitted to MDS programs across India.
AIIMS MDS: There is an All India Institute of Medical Sciences entrance test for admission in MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) program and the level of competence in dentistry is checked for the deemed universities in AIIMS, New Delhi.
AIPGDEE: All India Post Graduate Dental Entrance Examination - known as PGDEE - is a national exam for MDS admission which measures the medical dental knowledge of candidates in various subjects and concepts.
COMEDK PGET: Postgraduate entrance test for the MDS admissions is held by the consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka for Karnataka colleges in COMEDK.
PGIMER MDS: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research conducts an admission examination for MDS to indicate the knowledge and mastery of dental science to posts placed in the PGIMER-affiliated institutions.
