The tale of education for hotel business in India emerged in the 1960’s with the establishment of places like the Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition (IHMCTAN) at Mumbai and Delhi. The institutions of higher education not only provide bachelor degree programmes of 3 - 4 years duration but also an array of postgraduate diploma courses that are up to 2 years long such as hotel managements, culinary arts, travel & tourism etc. Under these study programmes, the principal areas of focus are hotel operations, housekeeping, food production, food and beverage services, revenue management and so forth. Presently, hospitality education in India is being offered in more than 36,000 institutions, wherein the capacity ranges from 50,000 to 3 lacs (a lakh is equal to 100,000) enrolments annually. 

Ph.D. (Hospitality) Admission Process

1. Research programs - Research the existing Ph.D. programs that offer a natural fit with your interests and career path. These essential attributes include professionally recognized faculty, areas of your interest for research, comprehensive curriculum, facility, and cost.

2. Studies entrance exams- Take compulsory standardized tests that include GRE, GMAT, TOEFL or IELTS exams. The recommended only to fulfill the minimum score requirements for the programs of your target.

3. Secure letters of recommendation - Give 3-4 teachers, school advisers, or employers the chance to have letters written on your behalf with a focus on your abilities, potential, and competencies for the Ph.D. program.

4. SOP - State first one or two paragraphs how you are interested on the subject, the driving factors, your specific research objectives, relevant experience and the reasons for hospitality Ph. D. 

5. Update CV/resume – Put together an academic CV which should outline your educational background, researches, professional experience, publications and presentations and include your honors/awards too. 

6. Apply to programs - Ensure that all materials requested in the application including test scores, transcript, recommendation letters, personal statement, CV/resume, application forms, and application fees are submitted. Meet all deadlines.

7. Skype / Phone Interview - If lucky enough, have a Skype interview with faculty members or some of them. If you are going to talk about your background, research interests, or how the program can be beneficial to you, be ready to discuss all these. 

8. Think of the acceptance offers - If you've received multiple acceptances, you might want to thoroughly analyze programs and financial aid packages before you make your acceptance.

9. Prepare for semester 1 – Include all the necessary pre-enrollment (if you haven’t done it already). See to accommodation, funding, etc., which would in transitioning smoothly into your Ph.D. program.

PhD Hospitality Course Eligibility 2024

1. Master's degree: The aspiring candidates must possess a master's degree in hotel/hospitality management, or in a field like tourism management with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade being the academic qualification.

2. Entrance test: Generally, all the universities and institutions hold an exam at an entrance level and a further screening test being either an interview or a group discussion. Generally, these tests consist of Unit-Grade Coordination-National Eligibility Test, Proficiency English Test, etc. 

3. Research proposal: In order to get accepted for PhD study, one is required to submit a research proposal, which explains one's scope of the research interest in the topic. The project is crucial while deciding on the business.

4. Work experience: For the majority of universities the period of work experience is 2-3 years in the hospitality industry to apply for the PhD program in hospitality and some institutes admit new graduates from master's program too. As to the experience, industry-relevant one is of highest priority.

5. No age limit: In most cases the age limit applicable is 75 years or less while you study, unlike in the case of bachelor's and other master's degrees where there is an upper age limit. Instead of just grades, your abilities to conduct practical research are evaluated.

Ph.D. (Hospitality) Entrance Exams

GRE: The GRE evaluates the analytical writing skills, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning abilities, which are often required for the enrollment into hospitality, PhD programs.

TOEFL: The TC-pass is used to evaluate English proficiency, which is very important for international students applying to hospitality PhD programs.

GMAT: The GMAT as a computer adaptive test assesses the applicants' abilities in analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative, and verbal, that may be used for admissions to hospitality PhD programs.

IELTS: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the means of evaluating English language proficiency, which is rather often required for admission into PhD programs specializing in hospitality.
