A 3-year full-time MDS in Oral Surgery is a post graduate course in dentistry that covers the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the diseases, injuries, and defects involving the realm of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, and neck. 

We focus on the full spectrum of oral surgery courses encompassing extraction of teeth, pre-prosthetic surgery, correcting misalignments of the jaw, biopsies of oral tissues, and implantology among others. Students will be able to perform basic and complex surgical procedures on the teeth in the situation of local or general anesthesia at the office or in the operating room.

MDS Oral Surgery Admission Process

1. Treatment was provided to Mr. Robert Smith, a 35-year old male, for extracted, lower left wisdom tooth that was horizontally impacted.

2. The patient reported some pain or swelling about twice a month at the site, which could not be stopped with antibiotics or morphine. 

3. Closer inspection revealed obliquely impacted lower left wisdom tooth with a bulky inflammed antrum and proximal decay on adjacent second molar tooth. 

4. The plan was the removal of lower left wisdom tooth under local anesthesia in form of an outpatient procedure.

5. Risks including nerve injury, bleeding, infection, and dry socket were briefly explained to the patient. The patient provided the appropriate written informed consent.  

6. The patient was prepared and draped as usual in sterile manner, then the surgery was performed smoothly and all the complication free, after which post-operative instructions were reviewed.

MDS Oral Surgery Eligibility

1. Besides the graduate level qualification the candidate needs to have completed the compulsory rotational internship as a requirement for a BDS degree. Secondly, it is imperative that the candidate be registered with the Dental Council of a respective state.

2. The Would-be candidate must have minimum teaching experience of 3 years in a dental college at the level of BDS degree. Also, a candidate can have 5 years of non-teaching experience heart after emerging from the college with a BDS degree..  

3. Publication of at least one research paper as first author in the national or an international peer-reviewed journal is an essential criterion and considering this factor after passing the BDS degree should be awarded the first rank. The paper should be on the theme of oral surgery.

4. Candidate is requested to present the research paper as first author in a local/ country level conference organized by a prestigious academic society. Candidates may have an option of a Reflection of two papers co-authored by him in both state/national level conference.

5. The aspiring candidate should have gone through the academic programs like fellowship programs or observer ship for oral surgery focusing on implantology, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, cleft lip and palate surgery.  

6. The candidate will successfully pass AIIMS or other institutes’ entrance exam to be admitted in MDS Oral Surgery Programme. The individual needs to meet other requirements prescribed by the body admitting him in the institute.

MDS Oral Surgery Entrance Exams

NEET MDS: National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for MDS is PCB based and covers knowledge in dental subjects like oral surgery, to assess the candidates' overall performance. Scores are utilised for getting admissions to the MDS courses offered by various dental colleges in the country of India.

AIIMS MDS: On the other hand, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences has a competitive entrance examination for MDS admissions, where the applicant’s knowledge is tested in the field of dentistry, including but not limited to oral surgery, along with the general aptitude and intellectual ability.

PGIMER MDS: Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research carries out an online test for the entry point of MDS aspirants to check their capability in dental section, oral surgery, and general intelligence.

COMEDK MDS: University consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka organizes a common entrance test for MDS admission, testing the command over as dental topics as oral surgery and aptitude.
