The Master of Architecture (MArch) course in India was put in place as a 2-years post graduate program in the 1960's after a 5-years undergraduate degree i.e. Bachelor of Architecture. In the 80s, they changed the 3 year MArch program for other universities. Basically, undergraduate MArch programs have become a forum for refined and innovative training in architecture design, landscape architecture, conservation and construction project management among others in the past few decades. 

Significant milestones such as the setup of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) in Ahmedabad in 1962 and 2-year M.Arch course in specializations from this institution helped in building the foundation for the development of Architecture in the country. The NIRF framework, which was introduced in the year 2016, has had a positive impact on the quality standards of the universities. Presently a student needs at least 50% marks in the BArch degree to be considered for the Master of Architecture.

Master of Architecture [M.Arch.] Admission Process

1. Bachelor degree - The Bachelor’s degree, though it doesn't necessarily have to be in architectural design, should be obtained. It goes without saying that any major is acceptable for an undergraduate student.

2. Pre-requisite courses - A good number of MArch students begin with a BArch or B.Sc. Architecture that may or may not match the M.Arch. requirements. there are a couple of opportunities that these programs also require you to have previously studied technical courses like architectural design studios, drawing, CAD and other history of architecture. The detailed prerequisites may differ due to the program being studied. 

3. Portfolio – You should have all your designed work presented in a portfolio, comprising of different design works such as sketches, drawings, models, and others. This is a part which shows off your visual design skills.

4. In addition, I'm looking forward to gathering letters of recommendation that will help strengthen my application for M.Arch.

5. Statement: Motivation and Intentions - Write an essay telling how you are motivated and why you are interested in a master's degree in architecture. This suggests your pivotal role is being demonstrated.  

6. GRE Scores - Unfortunately, most not all GRE scores. programs are one of the most significant admission considerations that demand the applicant to submit their GRE general test scores to be admitted into the program. 

7. GPA threshold - It is traditional that applicants have at least 3.0 GPA from the previous, undergraduate degree. What is required is hard work, discipline, and consistency. The only thing that may really matter is your final grades, that is, how well did you do in each class.

Master of Architecture [M.Arch.] Eligibility

1. An Architecture bachelor's degree or any other degree recognized by the competent authority with at least 50% marks.

2. Valid score in standard tests such as NATA or one of its alternative as most of institutions ask for.

3. Presentation of design projects completed abroad as an undergraduate.

4. Some said that for few colleges, an internship in Architecture will be a mandatory requirement as well.

5. We recommend enclosure of letters of recommendation from advisors well cognizant with the applicant's previous academic training.

Master of Architecture [M.Arch.] Entrance Exams

GRE (Graduate Record Examination): The test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Evaluates English language skills for non-native English speakers.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Another English proficiency test which is popular with the universities all over the world.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test): Assesses analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative and verbal skills.

Portfolio Review: Assessment of applicant's design work is a common prerequisite of admission.

Subject-Specific Tests: Some universities may prefer subject tests on architecture or related discipline.

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Evaluate mathematical skills, which are mostly needed for architecture schools.

GRE Subject Test in Physics: Analyses the degree of knowledge in the area of physics, which is beneficial in the study of architecture.

Aptitude Tests: Evaluate spatial and logical reasoning, a key aspect of architecture study and work.
