It is a research-oriented MPhil (Master of Philosophy) in India which is the focus of the advanced architectural research and theory. The typical MPhil Architecture program lasting for the 2 years full-time is credited. 

The program includes training in research skills, perfection of writing abilities, and acquisition of a specialized area of architecture. Students acquire research project methodology, statistical analysis and best research practices of effective presentations of research findings. We accept core classes like the study methods, concepts and theories in architecture, presenting seminars, and writing literature reviews. The course completes with a dissertation work when students engages in independent research and presentation of their subject theme under supervision of the faculty members.

M.Phil Architecture Eligibility

1. Architecture Bachelors’ degree from a recognized university with the marks 55% or more CGPA is necessary condition to apply for MPhil Architecture. Some programs may want test applicants for the entrance as well.

2. The students who are finishing Bachelor of Architecture can also apply for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) Architecture next year as long as their final degree is submitted when they apply. A provisional degree completion certificate can act like a sub-degree. 

3. In many centres, an applicant who meet the cut-offs of GATE will be the one chosen to be called for interview. Although few institutes offer direct admission on the basis of merit and interview, students are encouraged by instructors to begin their preparation early. The others may go for the ones who are provided with entrance test for admission.  

4. Candidates with a post graduate level architecture degree such as MArch or past experience in that area can also access MPhil architecture programs and study in relevant field of specialization. Work experience may be wanted on some institutes, because these may be more important to them.

5. MPhil in Architecture revolves around research that comprises special topics in the field. As a result, candidates have to submit some research idea together with the subjects of interest they are looking for while applying to colleges and universities. 

6. Besides the academic qualifications, candidates are assessed by their research competency, submissions of proposals, portfolio of architecture and in addition to it performance in the interview and written assessment after which the final admission.

M.Phil Architecture Entrance Exams

GATE (Architecture and Planning): Organized by IITs and IISc they test understanding of the architecture and planning concepts. Scores is a criterion of selection to MPhil programs in architecture across India.

NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture): Tests drawing ability, observation skills, aesthetic sensitivity, and critical reasoning. Many institutions accepting MPhil qualification in architecture as a requirement for considering online applications.

M.Phil. (Architecture) Overview 2024 FAQs

Usually, the MPhil in Architecture as the case may be should span two academic years but with variations depending on the program and the institution in question.

One of the basic requirements is that the applicants have a relevant degree in architecture or a related discipline. In addition to this, the classes may require students to submit a design portfolio and letters of recommendation.

The curriculum generally includes architectural theory, design studio, technology of architectural design, urban design, architectural history, building services, professional practice, and methods of research.
