IITs and IISERs are likely to remain the leading universities for PhD in India in 2024. Some facts that explain this phenomenon include; high standards of admission, quality research facilities and equipment, close links with industry and market, and a pool of talented and experienced faculty. 

The research oriented institutions such as the IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore already well known for their advanced research in engineering science and technologies, it will only be expected that they lead in the current ranking. Prominent university level institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Delhi will also continue to be preferred destinations for PhD in humanities and social sciences.

Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) is a central University in Delhi that provides PhD courses in a variety of fields for all its faculties such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Education, Engineering & Technology, Architecture & Ekistics, Law.

Mahatma Gandhi University, which is located in Kottayam, Kerala, has the PhD programmes in many disciplines of Science, Arts, Management and other professional fields.
