M.Ch. Plastic Surgery is another post-graduate medical super-specialty that deals with the surgical management of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery cases. Duration of the course is most often 3 years and this includes practical training as well as dissertation work. In the module students get to know about wound healing, transfer of tissue and techniques such as skin grafts and flaps reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery and aesthetic surgery such as face lifts and liposuction, breast augmentation and others. Their goal is to offer adequate training to the end that graduates will be fully equipped to perform emergency, trauma, and cancer reconstruction operations. After the completion of their course, they can opt for the numerous job opportunities available in hospitals, clinics, academics or private practice. There can be two years or five- six years of integrated courses with some institutes also providing research oriented courses. This is supported by practical experience that is gained trough theoretical and practical assignments under supervision of experienced faculty members.
The minimum education qualification mandatory for those joining the organization is an MBBS degree valid in India Medical Council. Universities have entrance exams that students have to pass and which may slightly differ from one university to another. The entrance exams accepted are NEET-PG, AIIMS PG, JIPMER PG, PGI Chandigarh entrance test, DNB CET and all state level tests. In addition to the entrance test scores many institutes also weigh the merit of qualifying examination, research experience and performance in the personal interview conducted during the selection procedure. For sponsored, foreign or NRI candidates, there may be different examinations and group or individual interviews. The turnover is often intense because of the available vacancies in the classroom.
